REES' Dr Marnie Howlett has contributed to the Royal Society's report Conference report: Ukraine’s recovery: rebuilding with research.
In May 2023 the Royal Society organised a conference in partnership with the Universities Policy Engagement Network (UPEN), together with the Fund of the President of Ukraine for Education, Science and Sports, and the Embassy of Ukraine. This was funded by Universities UK International, Research England and the British Council, and was supported by the Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Academy and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
The conference brought together researchers from Ukrainian and UK universities and policy makers to explore how research can help tackle some of the many challenges facing policy makers, from rebuilding Ukraine’s economy, to addressing the complex needs related to health and wellbeing, re-imagining regional security and partnerships, and planning for a green recovery. On day one, an exceptional selection of keynote speakers, panellists and session speakers across a breadth of scientific disciplines showcased the most relevant research on reconstruction and on some of the key areas crucial to the recovery of Ukraine. On day two of the conference, a group of policy makers and researchers discussed how the key recommendations from the conference might translate into policy initiatives and roadmaps for recovery.
