Associate Professor in the Economies of Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia at OSGA
I am a political economist investigating the interrelation between political institutions, economic development and societal change, with a regional focus on Russia, the former Soviet Union and China. Before joining OSGA as Associate Professor in the Economies of Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia in September 2023, I was Professor of Institutional Economics at the University of Bremen from 2019 to 2023, research fellow at LMU Munich from 2017 to 2019, and postdoc and assistant professor at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow from 2013 to 2017. I obtained my PhD in economics at IMT Lucca in 2013.
In my current research, I investigate how artificial intelligence and new surveillance technologies offer autocracies in the post-Soviet region new possibilities for political control. I also continue to work on projects related to media effects, the role of propaganda, Russian regional elites, the Russian security services, and the possibility that business organizations can foster political change.
