African Studies Centre alumnus Muhammed Alakitan has published a new paper in the journal Media, Culture and Society.

In the article, 'Contextualising the precarities of social media influencers in Nigeria', Alakitan examines the precarious working conditions faced by social media influencers in Nigeria , showing how platform algorithms, unequal monetisation, exploitative industry practices, and government policies shape their livelihoods. Drawing on interviews with influencers and industry representatives, the study argues that influencer precarity must be understood within its specific sociocultural, political, and geographical context rather than through predominantly Western frameworks.

Muhammed completed his MSc at the Centre with distinction in 2002 and is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge.
