FORTE - FORest ciTizenship for disaster rEsilience: learning from COVID-19 learning from COVID-19?

Project overview

"Citizenship from below"—the grassroots self-organization by marginalized groups to claim rights and recognition—has proven vital to disaster recovery and resilience, particularly during COVID-19.

This project examines how forest peoples in Brazilian Amazonia, disproportionately affected by the pandemic, have utilized collective action to mitigate its societal impacts and foster resilience.

FORTE unites a multidisciplinary team to explore how forest citizenship contributes to disaster resilience and societal renewal. By comparing insights from Brazil, the U.S., and the U.K., the project advances theoretical and empirical understandings while supporting real-world resilience efforts in marginalized communities.
