For the third event in our seminar series on activism and researching activism, our speakers will address youth mobilisation, specifically in reference to Zambia’s 2021 election. The poll saw the unexpected ousting of President Edgar Lungu and the victory of Hakainde Hichilema, mainly as the result of a large and unanticipated electoral turnout of young Zambian voters. The event will explain the social and political context of the vote and analyse the role of youth mobilisation in the wider dynamics of political and social change, from both activist and academic perspectives.
Our speakers are Laura Miti, Executive Director for the Alliance for Community Action (ACA), one of Zambia’s most significant civil society organisations, and Nicole Beardsworth, Lecturer in Politics at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
We have a limited number of seats due to Covid-regulations and only members of the University may attend in person. As a courtesy to others please wear a mask. Unfortunately we will not be able to admit anyone once capacity has been reached. Those attending in person are asked to carry out a Lateral Flow Test shortly before the seminar: they will be asked to provide evidence of a negative LFT (as a text message or email) as a condition of attendance.
