OICSD/Oxford Climate Society Event: Can Endless Economic Growth Ever be Green?
Monday 14 October, 7:15pm
Flora Anderson Hall, Somerville College
Conveners: OICSD/Oxford Climate Society
Speakers: Dr Jason Hickel, Mike Thompson
"We are at the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth." So were the damning words of Greta Thunberg at the UN climate summit. As the lacklustre outcome of the summit suggests, the commitment to tackle climate change is still secondary to maintaining economic growth.
The Oxford Climate Society and OICSD are pleased to invite you to a panel discussion where we will ask one of the most crucial questions for climate action: Can environmental and economic aims can ever be compatible? Or must we abandon economic growth to truly confront the climate crisis?
We are delighted to be hosting Dr Jason Hickel, an anthropologist at the London School of Economics who has written widely for the Guardian. Joining him is Mike Thompson, Head of Carbon Budgeting at the Committee on Climate Change. This year, the committee published their “Net Zero Report, which left room for economic growth whilst the UK achieves net-zero. The event will take the form of a panel discussion, followed by time at the end for you to ask your questions.
