Japan’s Grand Strategy in the 21st Century

This talk will take place at 13:00-14:00 GMT.

In Asia, the creation of an international liberal order has finally begun. Since the 1980s, many Asian nations started to be fully industrialized and the wave of democratization followed. The Philippines, Republic of Korea, other ASEAN nations and Taiwan turned democratic. Prime Minister Abe’s vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific has been crafted for promoting the emerging new trend in Asia. China seems to be leaving the West. The commitment of the West to freedom, democracy, free trade and the rule of law is now vital. India must be reached out because of its democratic tradition and its strategic weight in the future.

Mr. Kanehara served as Assistant Chief Cabinet Secretary to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe from 2012 to 2019, and in 2014, became the inaugural Deputy Secretary-General of the National Security Secretariat. He also served as Deputy Director of the Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office in 2012. Mr Kanehara had a distinguished career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Director-General of Bureau of International Law, Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Policy Bureau, Ambassador in charge of the United Nations and Human Rights.
