Japan and the V&A since 1984: A Curatorial Travelogue

Abstract:

This illustrated talk looks at some of the different approaches taken to representing and disseminating information about Japan at a major UK museum of art and design. The opening of the Toshiba Gallery of Japanese Art in 1986 was a key development, this followed in 2015 by an upgrade and redisplay with an increased emphasis on the modern and contemporary. Care of the collections and their expansion through new acquisitions are key curatorial activities while exhibitions, temporary displays, publications, teaching, digitisation and collaborative initiatives such as the Mazarin Chest conservation project have all constituted parts of the V&A’s Japan-focused agenda.
