Elena Zhirukhina has been a PhD candidate and Marie Curie Fellow at the University of St Andrews. Her doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Professor Rick Fawn, is entitled 'The state application of repressive and re-conciliatory tactics in the North Caucasus (2007-2014)' and is based on extensive empirical database of violent incidents including insurgent attacks and repressive countermeasures of the Russian government. Previously, she graduated from the Southern Federal University in Russia, having majored in political science, and worked for a research institution under the umbrella of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
