Dr Chigusa Yamaura is a sociocultural anthropologist, specializing in contemporary Japanese and Chinese society. She is a Departmental Lecturer at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies. Her work addresses a broad array of topics, including gender, cross-border marriage, life course expectations, motherhood, reproduction, childcare, and demographic change, as well as migration, colonial memory, and transnationalism in East Asia. She has published in the Journal of Asian Studies, Anthropological Quarterly, and Critical Asian Studies, and has a book from Cornell University Press titled, Marriage and Marriageability: The Practices of Matchmaking between Men from Japan and Women from Northeast China (2021). Her current research examines shifting conceptions of motherhood against the backdrop of demographic change in Japan.
