MSc African Studies

The MSc in African Studies is a three-term, nine-month course designed both as a stand-alone interdisciplinary introduction to current debates about Africa, and as a preparation for doctoral research on Africa. This advanced degree programme provides an excellent foundation for those who wish to expand their knowledge of African Studies, prior to working for NGOs, the civil service, international organizations, and the media, or in other professional capacities.

There are four components to the MSc degree in African Studies:

MSc in Modern Japanese Studies

The MSc in Modern Japanese Studies is a twelve month masters programme that provides students with a combination of courses about Japan, mainly the social sciences, an intensive language programme and a research methods course. It culminates with a 10,000 word dissertation submitted by 1st September.

Native speakers of Japanese or those with native speaker competence are also encouraged to apply for a place on the programme.

It is taught by full time members of the Nissan and Oriental Institutes and all the courses are designed for masters level students.

MPhil in Modern Japanese Studies

Students who successfully complete the MSc year, may progress to the second, MPhil year, during which they will do an advanced research methods course, a further language course, one more course about Japan (two in the case of those who do not take the language course), and a 30,000 word thesis to be handed in by 12 noon on Friday of the third week of Trinity Term.

The primary aim of the MPhil programme is to prepare students for subsequent doctoral work but it is also appropriate preparation for a wide range of careers.

MPhil Latin American Studies (MPhil LAS)

This is an eighteen-month programme which spans six academic terms, with the addition of a field work project in Latin America (up to 3 months).

This programme allows students to develop an individual research project informed by interdisciplinary teaching at the LAC and a period of fieldwork in Latin America. The programme is ideally suited to those students considering an academic or research-focused career, and is an excellent training for a doctoral degree.

MSc in Contemporary India

The MSc in Contemporary India is a pioneering degree; it is the first interdisciplinary post graduate degree to take contemporary India as its focus.  It examines India as an emerging global power, and seeks to understand both India’s achievements and its persistent problems. We probe the connections between the country’s democratic and developmental successes and failures. To ensure a multi-dimensional and critical enquiry into the contradictory features of contemporary India, we approach our study from a number of disciplinary and analytical perspectives, through six compulsory modules.
